From Unwanted Bycatch to Smoked Fish Delights. Retooling Fisherfolk to Create New Value-Added Products
“By-catch is low-value fish; it isn’t low in quality, but it is low in value because the price is lower. People don’t really go for it. But now, I have the opportunity to smoke it, salt it, and have it last longer. Now, instead of just having regular salt fish pholourie, I can offer smoked fish pholourie as a unique product. Having this smoker from GEF SGP and Future Fishers improves the standard of how I do my work. This is faster, more economical, and produces a higher volume of product for me to sell.”
Nekeisha Williams, Founder of Laurie Bites in Salybia

How are fisherfolk in Trinidad preserving local fisheries by maximising bycatch instead of discarding it? GEF SGP supported Future Fishers to purchase smokers and host the required training to teach fisherfolk and their families how to convert bycatch into a tasty retail product.

Sargassum: From Hazard to Opportunity
“As I was nearing graduation, I started thinking about how I could make a real difference in the fishing community where I live. Sargassum has become a major problem here, threatening livelihoods. Most fishermen depend on fishing as their monthly income, and the seaweed affects their daily lives. This project gave me the chance to explore practical solutions to the sargassum issue while building my engineering skills and knowledge. It also showed me how widely sargassum impacts society—and how solving it could support fishermen and create cleaner, more enjoyable beaches for tourists.”
Narita Persad, 14-year-old winner of the CHAPO Sargassum Snatch Innovation Competition Funded by GEF SGP
